SOA

SOA, service-oriented architecture, is a methodology for designing and programming, recognizing the interoperability in mind and offer as services to external users or programmers. Both in enterprise and social environment, it is very important to connect each other without exposing their database or internal private secure information.

So, service-oriented architecture provides a way for two different entities to send and receive information by exposing the service or web exposed API for the programmers. SOA leverages the XML, WSDL, and SOAP protocol.

Best example of continued usage of this practice could be seen mashups, Saas, and cloud computing. If your organization used distributed computing, your organization has already leveraged the path of using SOA.
